A century on from the sinking of the HMT Leasowe Castle, the Wirral venue has paid tribute to the historic event which took place on May 27, 1918.
Leasowe Castle welcomed John Creedy, the grandson of one of the vessels 3000 passengers, exactly 100 years after the sinking. To commemorate the lives that were lost, John has temporarily donated a framed image of the ship alongside a brief account of the events that took place, both of which will be on display in the castle.
The HMT Leasowe Castle, which was used to convey military troops across the Mediterranean Sea during 1917 and 1918, sunk after being targeted by a torpedo whilst on route to Marseilles with around 85 men thought to have lost their lives.
General Manager Mike Dewey said: “Leasowe Castle is steeped in history, dating as far back as the 16th century and the HMT Leasowe Castle is certainly a very special part of our timeline. We are incredibly moved by John’s account of his grandfather’s story and are honoured that he has chosen to commemorate this milestone anniversary of the ship’s sinking with us.
“We are able to get a glimpse into exactly what happened on that day in 1918 as John shared a transcript written by his grandfather documenting the events as they occurred. With great emotion he described how ‘nothing was visible but a tremendous swirl of water and bits of wreckage’. We are very fortunate that this piece of history has been preserved for over three generations and we are able to pay our respects today in 2018.”
Leasowe Castle’s recently refurbished Wreckers Bar also pays homage to the surrounding shores, inspired by historic group of people known as ‘wreckers’ who were situated across the North Wirral Coastline from New Brighton to Leasowe.
Mike added: “To pay tribute to the anniversary of HMT Leasowe Castle we will be displaying the names of those who died outside Wrecker’s Bar to allow guests and residents alike to learn more about the event and really embrace the history of the Castle. We would
encourage anyone who is interested in finding out more to visit us as images and information will be on display for a short time.”

If you’ve not got plans made already, we’ve carefully selected our favourite - and coolest bars around Liverpool and Manchester that are perfect for a cheeky day time tipple…
Dirty Martini, Manchester
Despite it being pretty new to the Manchester scene, Dirty Martini has become one of the hottest bars in Manchester - and it’s success continues to grow. Offering gorgeous cocktails, happy hours and throwback tunes, it’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for a laid back drink - or a little dance with the girls!
Furnival’s Well, Liverpool
Hidden away in the quirky ropewalks area of Liverpool is the wonderful Furnvial’s Well (former home to The Bridewell pub). Way back in the day, the building was a prison, and the bar takes huge inspiration from its Victorian heritage which is clearly present throughout its decor and drink list. The team are extremely knowledgeable in their drink offerings and is one of our favourite Liverpool gems.
The Fitzgerald, Manchester
We LOVE a speakeasy bar and the chilled vibes they offer. So, imagine our delight to discover that Manchester is home to its very own, The Fitzgerald, that offers an indulgent selection of food and drinks. It’s perfect for those cosy date nights or a night out with friends!

As with any season wedding trends are forever changing, we found the gorgeous wedding trends that you’re likely to see in 2018....
One dress, two looks
For centuries, every bride has dreamed of her wedding dress. The one that will wow everyone, stop them their tracks - and hopefully bring a few tears to the eye! However, as times have changed brides are not longer committing to that one dress. They’re opting for a range of fabulous looks created on one dress which can be changed throughout the day from walking down the aisle to partying on in the night - perfect for spicing things up throughout the day! It’s an amazing trends to those indecisive brides!
With the constant rise of wedding costs, brides and grooms are cutting back on extravagant wedding decor and opting for simple, very elegant and soft touches which look delicate and super fantastic - and help keep things in budget!
Forget overrated flowers, and say hello to oversized balloons which can be filled with anything from confetti or rose petals! If you’re on Instagram, you’ll have probably already seen them but the trend is set to grow - and we are most definitely a fan!
Are you heading to a wedding this year? If so, let us know what trends you love! #GBLOVES
Wedding season is upon us, hurrah! If you’re like us, you’ll have a couple of exciting weddings coming up across the next couple of months. A wedding is always such a special ossion - where you can get drunk and no one tends to remember! Up and down the country, there’s plenty of people preparing themselves for the next big wedding for most of us, the Royal one! We’re super excited to see the lovely Prince Harry say I do to the beautiful Meghan Markle. If you’re planning on joining in on the fabulous celebrations at home, we’ve pulled together a few cocktails that are perfect for raising a toast to, for the new bride and groom. Enjoy!
Sparkling Elderflower Lemonade
It was announced earlier this month that the bride and groom have opted for a royal wedding cake would be a lemon elderflower cake so it goes up craving a fresh cocktail - and duhhh dahhh let us present to you the sparkling elderflower lemonade which is made up of sparkling wine, fresh lemon juice and elderflower liqueur. The perfect way to cool down on a warm May weekend.
You’ll need: ½ cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, ½ cup of elderflower liqueur, ½ cup fresh lemon juice, 1 ½ cups ice cubes and three cups of chilled sparkling wine.
To make: Microwave the sugar and water for two minutes until the sugar dissolves and then cool completely. Stir together the sugar, syrup, elderflower, lemon juice & ice cubes and let stand for around 20 mins. Add the wine in and serve up. Delicious.
The Royal Rose
We all know and love Kate for being a wonderful English rose but let’s showcase our dedication to the lovely ladies marrying into our royal family. The Royal Rose is inspired by the flower of England, and is made with rose petal essences. Divine!
You’ll need: 2 teaspoons rose jam, 1 oz Hendrick’s Gin, ½ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 oz champagne
To make: Combine all the ingredients into a mixing glass - expect the champagne - shake well, strain into a flute glass and top it up with champagne and for the finishing touch, add a small rose petal on top. Beautiful, elegant and classy - just like Meghan!
Seeing as Gin is one of the most popular drinks around at the moment, it only seems fair to share a delicious gin based cocktail, the Wedding Belle which is perfect for wedding season!
You’ll need: 1 oz gin, 1 oz Dubonnet, ½ oz cherry brandy, ½ oz orange juice
To make: Simply combine all the ingredients above and get your best cocktail shaking moves on the go. Served in a stemmed cocktail glass and finish it off by garnishing with an orange twist.

Bank Holiday! A whole extra day away from the desk to spend with your loved ones. However you see fit. For many it’s a day lounging around, chilling in the house while for many more it’s about getting as much done as possible with the whole extra 24 hours lovingly given to us by our government… So as we are only a week away, we are already putting the out of office on and making plans for the long weekend ahead. We don’t want to jinx things but the weather is looking “OK” which means the region is your oyster if you’re looking for a fantastic day out.
For those who have just finished the latest TV binge, and are looking for something new, we’d definitely recommend Peaky Blinders. No spoilers, but it’s essentially about a group of Birmingham gangsters working their way up in the world and stars the gorgeous Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy (no more needs to be said). And with all great TV shows, this one features some fantastic locations filmed across our very own North West. Arley Halls is one right on the doorstep which offers the most beautiful gardens to explore - whether it’s a romantic walk with your other half or a picnic with the family - or if you’re like us, a place to reenact your favourite peaky blinders scenes…
Okay, okay, it’s an obvious one but the GB team have recently been and it’s absolutely fantastic. If like us, you haven’t been in over a decade (either if you were a kid or had kids to take there) you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the great new attractions, animals, and entertainment that’s now on offer. Our personal favourite are the ‘islands’ inspired by South Asia transporting you a world away into exotic cultures. We enjoyed a lazy boat ride soaking up the sun taking in the sights of beautiful birds, and swinging monkeys. And not to forget the bat cave…
Fresh air, breathtaking views and a country pub for tea - isn’t that what bank holidays are all about? This one’s for the more outdoorsy-types amongst us so get your walking boots on and take in as much of this area of natural beauty as you can. And if you’re into your ghosts and ghouls, the pike is haunted by a headless horseman so don’t stay after dark! (Well, you can really, we’re just scaredy cats)!!

With only four weeks to go until the biggest wedding of the year, it’s time for us to start thinking about the outfits find somewhere where we can watch it and raise a toast to them as we were not one of the lucky ones invited to their special day *sob*. However, we are excited to see the loved up pair say I do. Whether you’re planning on sitting in and watching the big day - or heading out, shops and restaurants up and down the country are keen to jump in on the fun. Here’s some of the best ways you can celebrate...
The Savoy London
There’s nothing that says British wedding more than an afternoon tea at The Savoy in London. It boasts of the Queen’s favourite cake - Chocolate Ganache, rich tea biscuits and raisins. Sounds delicious. And then you’ve got the new cocktail - The Royal Wedding - which can be enjoy throughout the whole month of May.
Throw your own party
Get the crowns and the fancy cutlery out and invite family and friends to enjoy the special day. There’s plenty of shops stocking royal decorations and accessories that you need for you to take part in the day from the comfort of your own home!
Hotel Cafe Royal
If a night away is what you fancy, treat yourself to Hotel Cafe Royals two exclusive packages; the Regent Royal Wedding and Empire Royal Wedding which include limousine trips to Windsor - where Prince Harry & Meghan will be marrying, a picnic hamper, tour of the Royal Warrant Holders, and VIP shopping service. Sounds fabulous!
